It’s been said there are “answer” churches and there are “journey” churches. Florence Christian Church wants to welcome and meet you no matter where you are on life’s journey. Maybe you’re single or married. Maybe you’re divorced or in a single parent or blended family. Maybe you’re the “traditional mom and dad, two kids-and-a dog kind of family.” We are grateful to be a congregation that celebrates the diversity of the human experience, values the participation and leadership of both men and women, and understands that people worship in many ways. That has led to creating three distinct worship experiences each Sunday morning: 8:30 a.m., a traditional service; 9:45 a.m., a contemporary, multi-media service; and 11:00 a.m., a service that blends traditional with contemporary. We have long thought of ourselves as a serving congregation meeting the needs of the community. This is how we have become a campus of ministry that includes childcare, after school care, and senior independent living. We are large enough to provide adventurous and vibrant ministries for children, youth, and adults of all generations. But we are also small enough to feel a sense of belonging and care for each other.
Florence Christian Church is one of 3500 congregations in the United States and Canada who call themselves “Disciples.” The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is the first Christian denomination founded on American soil. We number approximately 1 million members. The Disciples faith perspective is one of religious freedom and responsibility. We believe that each person has a unique and valuable insight into God’s Word in scripture. Together we challenge each other by sharing our perspectives and intentionally seeking to grow in faith and understanding. Disciples celebrate communion each week when we gather for worship. Everyone who believes in Christ is invited to share in communion at the Lord’s Table. To become a member of Florence Christian Church one need only confess their faith in Christ and be baptized. We practice believer’s baptism by immersion. One may also transfer membership by reaffirming their faith and all forms of baptism are accepted. Disciples believe in “the priesthood of all believers.” Men, women, and children take their place along side ordained ministers in worship and in church leadership. Disciples strive for Christian Unity. We seek to unite all Christians, affirming the “one body of Christ.” By the grace of our Lord, may we ever do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our God (Micah 6:6-8).
